August Causes to Support

As summer comes to a close, doors are opening up for generous giving opportunities. August is packed with incredible causes to celebrate and support, from Black Business Month to National Nonprofit Day to Women’s Equality Day.

You’ll notice each cause’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is a global framework that was adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to address the world’s most pressing causes.

Below you’ll find a monthly guide of causes and nonprofits that you can easily support through Pledge as a way to honor these special dates, but you don’t need a day to do something good. All Month: Black Business Month

SDG Alignment: #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, #10 Reduced Inequalities, #16 Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

August is National Black Business Month in America, a time to recognize Black-owned businesses across the country. The COVID-19 outbreak disproportionately hurt minority businesses—with Black-owned businesses being especially disrupted. This month, make a conscious effort to shop Black-owned businesses, or support Black-owned organizations working to promote greater economic freedom for the Black community, like the ones below:

SDG Alignment: #3 Good Health and Well-Being

August is National Wellness Month - the perfect time for us to reflect on our mental and physical well-being and health, especially after what’s been a particularly stressful year for most. Check out these nonprofits and their missions of bringing wellness to others, and make sure to take care of yourselves this month and throughout the year!

August 9th: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

SDG Alignment: #10 Reduced Inequalities, #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, #16 Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

August 9th is dedicated to raising awareness and protecting the rights of the world's Indigenous population. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and worsened many existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting indegenous and other populations that were already disproportionately grappling with from poverty, illness, discrimination, instability or financial insecurity. Support these suffering communities by supporting the causes below:

August 15th: World Honey Bee Day

SDG Alignment: #15 Life on Land

More than 75% of the world’s food crops rely on pollinators, according to the United Nations Environment Program, yet they are in decline on a worldwide scale. Facing a number of threats, including the use of toxic pesticides and habitat loss, these pollinators need your help. Here are a few projects that you can support:

August 17th: National Nonprofit Day

August 19th: World Humanitarian Day

SDG Alignment: The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals

This international day of recognition was established in 2009 by the United Nations to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It commemorates the day in 2003 when Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and twenty-one of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. These are a few nonprofits that align with this solemn day of reflection on how we can make the world a better place together:

August 26: Women’s Equality Day

This day is celebrated nationally to commemorate the 1920 ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which deemed it illegal to deny the right to vote on the basis of one’s sex.
